Rust Update October 1, 2026: Animal Husbandry and Wipe
Rust PC · Staging Overview · September 24, 2026
October 1, 2026, we await the monthly Rust update. Cows and sheep, milk and wool, new dishes, a biofuel generator, and monument changes are already being tested on Staging. We delve into the published list of innovations and how they might impact the next wipe.
WIPE ON PROSTOJ
01.10.2026 · 21:00 MSK
Gather your team and prepare for a fresh start. Everyone is welcome at the wipe! You can choose a server on the PROSTOJ main page.
Information Status: this is a preliminary overview of the testing branch, not the final patch notes for the October release. The update content, recipes, rewards, and balance may still change. 21:00 MSK — the announced time for our wipe; the actual launch after the update depends on the release of the Facepunch build and server restarts.
Livestock farming is one of the main themes on Staging before the October update. Illustration based on Rust in-game references.

Cows and Sheep in Rust: A New Livestock Cycle
In the testing branch, cows, bulls, calves, sheep, and lambs have been added. Along with them come the Animal Fence and Animal Gate. The farm gets a new direction: animal care, product acquisition, and selling of grown livestock.
According to public changes from Facepunch, sheep can be sheared for wool, and cows provide milk. Developers are also working on taming, herd behavior, and breeding. This makes feed and pen space part of the farm management, not just decoration next to the base. Source: Livestock_animals branch by Facepunch.
Selling Animals and Wool in the Large Barn
In the Large Barn, a livestock trader appears. You can bring an adult sheep, cow, or bull to sell to him. He also buys wool. Calves and lambs are not listed in the published list of animals for sale: first, you need to raise an adult animal.
In development, sales are arranged through offers of rewards from the trader. Their composition changes actively, so you cannot promise a fixed amount of scrap or a specific item for each cow in advance. Check the conditions in the NPC dialogue before trading.
Feeding Trough, Water, and Transport
- Hitch & Trough now supports industrial adapters, expanding feed delivery options.
- The feeding trough now has a separate section for water with liquid input/output connections.
- Animals can be secured on cargo platforms of vehicles and transported between the farm and the trader.
To prepare the base, it is wise to leave space for a pen, water supply, and vehicle access. In recent commits, cows require a large cargo platform; if the car overturns or sinks, the animals detach. These are details of the testing implementation that should be double-checked after the release.
New Products: Beef, Mutton, Milk, and Pies
Livestock farming expands Rust's cuisine. Two types of meat have been added in Staging — beef and mutton. Each has raw, cooked, and spoiled versions. Milk, skimmed milk, cream, and wool have also been introduced.
| Category | Additions |
|---|---|
| Meat | Raw / Cooked / Spoiled Beef and Mutton — beef and mutton in three states. |
| Dairy Products | Milk, Skimmed Milk, Cream — milk, skimmed milk, and cream. |
| Bakery | Beef Pie — beef pie; Shepherd's Pie — shepherd's pie; Brioche Bread — brioche bread. |
| Enhanced Variants | Rich versions of all pies and Creamy / Milky variants of pure ore teas. |
What's Special About Creamy, Milky, and Rich
The new dairy products connect the farm with food preparation and tea brewing. In test materials, creamy tea variants enhance the effect, while milky teas extend its duration. Enhanced Rich versions are provided for pies. Exact percentages, duration, and recipes should be verified in the release build — it's too early to transfer early testing numbers to the October wipe. Rustafied's review of testing on September 17.
In Facepunch commits, the beef pie is described as temporarily increasing the character's food capacity. The mutton pie accelerates animal bonding to the player and prevents bull attacks for the duration of the effect. These properties are still in development. Public changes to the food and animal system.
Biofuel Generator: Turning Food into Fuel
Another novelty on Staging is the Biofuel Generator. According to the development description, it converts food into Low Grade Fuel. This device is for fuel production and requires electricity itself.
Another use for food supplies. Artistic illustration; the actual generator structure is not shown here.
In the current implementation, the mixture needs to be stirred. Developers have added state indication and an electrical output needs stirring, which can be used to signal the need for stirring. After adding new food, re-servicing is required. Fuel output and processing time depend on the food; the exact balance continues to change. Source: Biofuel Generator branch by Facepunch.
At the start of the wipe, it is a reason to pay closer attention to food supplies. Some food will be needed for survival and animal care, while excess can potentially become fuel raw material.
New Loot Rooms: Three Power Phase Rooms
In the published Staging list, new loot rooms are distributed across the Power Phase. It's useful to know which monuments are assigned to each phase for route planning:
| Phase | Monuments |
|---|---|
| Power Phase 1 | Harbours, Ferry Terminal, Junkyard. |
| Power Phase 2 | Water Treatment, Sewer Branch, Airfield, Radtown. |
| Power Phase 3 | Military Tunnels, Nuclear Missile Silo, Launch Site — two new rooms. |
Do not interpret the wording about open rooms as a promise of immediate access to all loot from the first minute of the wipe. The announcement ties rooms to power phases; access conditions and loot composition should be checked in the update.
Airwolf Post-Wipe: Repair First, Then Purchase Equipment
In Staging, the Airwolf helipad starts wiped out. To unlock the ability to buy equipment from Airwolf, the pad must be restored. The specified repair cost is:
- 30,000 wood;
- 10,000 metal fragments;
- 100 ropes.
Resources for restoring the pad as per the Staging list. The final cost may change.
For a team planning to switch to a helicopter early, restoring the pad becomes another preparation step. The usual funds for purchase may not be enough: first, a functional Airwolf is needed.
Other Changes: Defense, Skins, and Responsive Throws
Sandbag Stages
The sandbag barricade has been reworked. Now it can be built up to four stages, placing a new barricade on top of the previous one. This adds options for shelters and defensive positions.
Skins for Hatches and Machete Update
All hatches with ladders now support Workshop skins. The Machete Refresh is also included — an update to the machete. From this point alone, we do not infer changes in damage or crafting cost, so new combat characteristics are not attributed in advance.
Client-Side Prediction for C4, Satchels, and Grenades
Client-side prediction has been added for throws of C4, satchels, and grenades. Its purpose is to show the thrown item's movement on your screen faster with subsequent synchronization with the server. This improves throw responsiveness, not announced explosive enhancements.
How to Test the Rust Update Before October 1
As per the published announcement, the test servers have already been wiped and launched, and the client update is available on Steam. To connect, you need a separate Rust - Staging Branch.
- Open the Steam library and find Rust - Staging Branch.
- Install or update this client.
- Launch it and connect to the Staging server. The regular Rust client is not suitable for these test servers.
- If you encounter a bug, report it via F7 or on the official Rust staging-bug-reports Discord.
Instructions from the early closed test AUX01 may differ from the latest announcement. Follow the current Staging guidelines: the fresh announcement does not mention a separate beta branch password.
