Big updates to Rust on Steam
Big things are on the horizon! The developers are not only slacking off, but also contributing to the game's development! So, let's get started:
☢Nuclear missile bunker
The next RT to grace the plains of Rust is on its way! The Nuclear Missile Silo, added to the AUX2 branch late last week, is officially in test mode. It looks like it will be a large underground monument with lots of rooms, crates, and NPCs.
Unfortunately, AUX2 is currently closed to the public, so there are no visuals or details yet. However, any project like this that was released on AUX2 was implemented in the game. We will keep you updated when this new monument becomes available for wider testing.
Double saddles
Also coming to the AUX2 branch, dual saddles are on the way. Soon, two players will be able to ride a single horse, and these dual saddles will likely be available for testing at the same time as the Nuclear Missile Silo.
In-game map improvements
The third thing that will be merged into the AUX2 staging branch is a bunch of improvements to game locations and mapping. Apparently, players and clans will soon be able to signal others on the go, marking multiple objects for friends by leaving multiple markers on the map. Maybe the markers will be different depending on what you're pointing at, enemy, loot, or resources! This will all work with the compass as well, based on what we've seen in the commits.
As with previous projects, this will be available for wider testing once AUX2 is open to the public (or once it's all moved to AUX1 or the main game branch). With 3 new features, we're guessing the Facepunch team is gearing up for an April 6th update and a forced wipe in 3 weeks.
Attack helicopter
Not merged with AUX2 and still on a separate branch only for developers, the attack helicopter continues to evolve as the gunner UI is implemented. This week, ammo counters and zoom indicators were added to the gunner UI.
Based on the commits, the Attack Helicopter will be similar to the Minicopter, except it will have skis instead of wheels and will shoot freaking missiles (and maybe even be armed with a heavy machine gun).
Multi-threaded network
For several weeks, the Facepunch team has been working on implementing an updated version of the network for the game. This includes changing the network to a multi-threaded process (to help with optimization and performance). This week, launched in an optional server and client update, the multi-threaded network was enabled by default.
The developers have indicated that this will ideally show a small increase in overall performance on both the client and server side. We are running tests and intend to fully migrate our servers to the new mode in the near future.
The principle of the system is that previously one server (one PC) served a specific server, now they are planning to introduce a new system, when several server machines (several PCs) will serve several servers, and if one of the servers starts to overload, then the other server machines will give part of their computing power to the busier one in order to pull its work!
Car clothing
A new Quality of Life feature to quickly equip clothing is on the way! Simply hold down the sprint or crouch key and right-click or hover over loot from a loot container to instantly equip clothing items (if they can be worn without removing anything else). So, if a barrel or crate drops armor and you don't have any armor on, it will be equipped to your character immediately.
