Wrong Connection Protocol: Rust version does not match

Close Rust and wait for the update to finish in Steam. After the patch, the server also needs to be updated: if the client is already updated, check the server status and re-enter after it starts.

Client and server update

  1. Close the game and check the Steam Downloads section.
  2. Make sure you are using regular Rust, not Rust Staging Branch or Console Edition.
  3. Check the selected beta branch in the game properties: it should match the server.
  4. If other servers are opening up and the selected one isn't, check the update announcement and status in the server list.
  5. If there is no update and the error persists, restart Steam and check the game files.
