Rust's New Blueprint Fragment System and Workbenches: My Thoughts After the October Update

In October 2025, Rust received one of the most extensive updates in recent years. We've already covered all the changes in detail—from new blueprints to the volcano and C4 drones . Here, I'll share my impressions and emotions regarding the new blueprint fragment system and the new workbench crafting system.

? What are drawing fragments?

After the update, Scrap is no longer the only way to advance in crafting. Blueprint Fragments are now available—special items that must be found in the world. Without them, you won't be able to assemble a T2 or T3 Workbench, even if you have a mountain of scrap metal. They can't be crafted or sold, and each find feels like real progress.

If you want to see how this all fits into the overall context of the patch, here's our detailed overview of the full Rust October 2025 update .

? Types of fragments and where to find them

Fragment type Where to find What is it for?
Basic Blueprint Fragment On the table with the red card in the blue room (puzzle room). Also found in green and red zones. You need 5 pieces to create Workbench T2.
Advanced Blueprint Fragment Drops from elite crates and hackable containers. Look for them in the Launch Site, Military Tunnels, and Missile Silo. You need 5 pieces to create Workbench T3.

There are rumors that in the future it will be possible to combine basic fragments into advanced ones, but this has not yet been implemented.

⚙️ New requirements for workbenches

Rust Vertsaki
Scrap is now just part of the recipe. Fragments have become a mandatory element of crafting:

Workbench New requirements Previously it was required Comment
Workbench T2 5 Basic Blueprint Fragments + 250 Scrap ~500 Scrap (without fragments) Fragments are a required component, Scrap has been reduced.
Workbench T3 5 Advanced Blueprint Fragments + 500 Scrap ~1250 Scrap Fragments are only needed for creation, not for repair.

?️ Changes to monuments

With the introduction of fragments, the developers reworked the loot in monuments—now you can't get very far without raids.

  • Fragments are guaranteed to appear on tables with cards (especially in the blue room).
  • Elite and hackable containers give an increased chance of receiving Advanced Fragments.
  • Loot distribution has become less predictable—routes need to be reconsidered.
  • Some puzzles have become more difficult (especially in Missile Silo).

? Pros and cons

Pros:

  • Rust once again encourages exploration and risk.
  • Every discovery of a fragment feels like an achievement.
  • Monuments have become really important - PvP is in full swing there.
  • Progress has become deeper and more interesting.

Cons:

  • It's more difficult for beginners now - initial progress is slow.
  • The rarity of fragments depends on the map - it is not always balanced.
  • The RNG and competition for loot can be annoying at first.

? Conclusion and personal impressions

When I first built Workbench T2 after the update, I honestly felt a sense of victory. Rust forces you to take action again, not just farm Scrap alone. It's a step toward dynamism, risk, and true survival.
